Seven people were killed in a shooting and stabbing attack on Tuesday in Tel Aviv, Israeli police confirmed, the BBC reports.
The media reported that several other people were injured - some seriously - when a gunman opened fire on citizens in the Jaffa area.
The deadly attack began in a train car and continued on the platform, according to a statement from the local police.
Videos posted on social networks show motionless bodies scattered on the street.
Police said members of the public "neutralized" the gunman and another knife-wielding attacker and described the motive as "terror."
The identities of the perpetrators have not been disclosed. Some Israeli media previously reported eight dead, although it was unclear if that included the attackers.
The shooting happened just before Iran's missile attack on Israel began.
Police on the scene took cover as anti-aircraft missiles and rockets flew over the city and air raid sirens sounded.
Witnesses described the shooting, and the BBC reports that Benjamin Racon told Reuters: "People were on the ground and told me to duck. I saw a terrorist in front of me. He wanted to do something and the security forces arrived on the scene and they ran towards him."
Another witness told the Jerusalem Post newspaper that at first they thought the shooting was fireworks before realizing that "it was something much worse," according to the BBC.
The owner of one shop said they quickly closed when they saw "a bunch of people running and shouting 'terrorist attack'".
The Haaretz newspaper quoted an eyewitness who was in the synagogue at the time of the attack: "Among the worshipers were medics who volunteer for the MDA (Israel Emergency Medical Service). In the synagogue we treated a man who was wounded, and then we ran out into the street to help others who were wounded".
Earlier, Reuters reported, citing the Israeli police, that there were at least six killed and nine wounded.
The agency also said earlier that police had labeled the incident a terrorist attack, but there was no immediate claim of responsibility from armed Palestinian factions or other militant groups.
Shortly after the attack, air raid sirens sounded as Iran launched missiles at Israel.
Footage broadcast by Israeli television channels shows two gunmen exiting the train and opening fire on people on the platform. In addition to the six dead, at least nine people were wounded with varying degrees of injuries, the police said, as reported by Reuters.
MDA earlier said it received a call at 19:01 p.m. (18:01 CET) that people were injured in the shooting.
"Doctors and paramedics provided medical assistance on the spot to the wounded with varying degrees of injuries, including those who were unconscious," the MDA said, as reported by Reuters.
Israel's finance minister, a hardliner, Bezalel Smotrich, who according to Reuters is responsible for significant areas of policy concerning the occupied West Bank, said the attackers came from the West Bank city of Hebron.
In a post on the X social network, he said he would demand from the cabinet that family members of the suspects be deported to Gaza and that their homes be destroyed.
The war in Gaza began nearly a year ago when gunmen led by the Hamas movement attacked Israel, killing about 1.200 people and taking more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli reports.
The Israeli campaign has killed more than 41.000 Palestinians, according to Palestinian health authorities, and has also devastated the enclave.
Israel is also fighting Hezbollah in Lebanon to stop rocket attacks on northern Israel, in the process of killing Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah last Sunday in an airstrike in Beirut, Reuters writes.
