A US airstrike on the Ras oil port in Yemen killed 74 people and wounded 171, the Houthi rebels said today.
The strikes represent one of the deadliest attacks yet in the bombing campaign launched by US President Donald Trump on March 15.
The Iran-backed Houthis fired a missile at Israel today, which the Israeli military said was intercepted, but alarm sirens sounded in Tel Aviv and other cities.
The Hutaal-Masirah satellite TV channel broadcast detailed footage of the aftermath of the attack on the port of Ras, showing bodies strewn across the ground.
The statement said hospital workers and civilians at the port were killed in the attack, which caused a huge explosion and fire.
The US military's Central Command said that "US forces have taken action to eliminate the source of fuel for Houthi terrorists and deprive them of the illegal revenue they have used to terrorize the entire region for more than a decade."
"This strike was not intended to harm the people of Yemen, who rightly want to remove the Houthis and live in peace," the statement added.
The military did not acknowledge that there were any casualties and refused to comment.
The Houthis condemned the US attack.
"This completely unjustified aggression constitutes a flagrant violation of Yemen's sovereignty and independence and a direct targeting of the entire Yemeni people," the Houthis said in a statement.
Ras Port, a major oil processing hub, is located in Yemen's Hodeidah province on the Red Sea coast. It is the end of an oil pipeline that runs to Yemen's energy-rich Marib province, which remains held by allies of the Yemeni government in exile.
Shortly after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, triggered by the Palestinian Hamas movement's attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Yemeni Houthi rebels, who are backed by Iran and express solidarity with the Palestinians, launched dozens of rocket attacks on Israel and the Red Sea.
These attacks ceased with the ceasefire that came into effect on January 19, but the Houthis, who claimed responsibility for continuing attacks on Israel, have vowed to resume them and carry them out as long as Israel continues its attacks on the Gaza Strip.
