Several people were killed today in the crash of a small private plane that crashed early this morning into a residential neighborhood in San Diego, California, US, local authorities said.
"We believe there are more victims," the San Diego Fire Department told reporters, adding that the victims appeared to be in the Cessna 550 plane, not in the vehicles or homes damaged in the crash.
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said the plane crashed at around 3.45:XNUMX a.m. local time.
The housing area affected by the accident, near Montgomery-Gibbs Airport, "is one of the largest military housing areas in the world," said Naval Base San Diego Commander Robert Healy, who was also present at the press conference.
The private plane could have carried eight to ten people, including the pilot, local authorities said, but they still do not know the exact number of passengers at the time of the accident.
More than a dozen houses were damaged and several cars burned, authorities said.
San Diego police said they had evacuated three streets and advised residents to contact authorities if they found debris or "smell kerosene."
The injured residents, some of whom had "burns on their feet," were treated at the scene. There were no serious injuries at the scene of the accident.
