United States President Donald Trump said today that the end of the reign of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei is approaching, saying it is time "to seek new leadership in Iran," the American online media outlet Politico reported.
Trump told Politico that the authorities in Tehran are ruled by repression and violence, and blamed Khamenei for "destroying the country."
"What he is guilty of, as the leader of the country, is the complete destruction of the country and the use of violence at levels never seen before. For the country to function, even at a very low level, the leadership should focus on properly governing their country, like I do in the United States, and not on killing thousands of people to maintain control," Trump said, commenting on Khamenei's recent posts on the social network X.
In them, Khamenei called Trump a "criminal", blaming him for the riots and numerous deaths in Iran.
"We hold the US president guilty for the victims, damage and slander he inflicted on the Iranian nation... The US made extensive preparations to organize this uprising. The uprising was a prelude to even greater plans. The Iranian nation defeated the US," Khamenei wrote on X, adding that "the US must be held accountable."
Trump added in a comment to Politico that Khamenei is a "sick man" and that poor leadership has made Iran "the worst place to live in the world."
"That man is sick, a man who should be running his country properly and stopping killing people. His country is the worst place to live anywhere in the world - because of bad leadership," Trump said.
