United States President Donald Trump threatened today to impose 100 percent tariffs on goods imported from Canada to the United States if Canada continues trade negotiations with China.
Trump tweeted that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was "deeply mistaken if he thinks he will make Canada a Chinese port for shipping goods to the United States."
Canada has reached an agreement with Beijing to reduce tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for lower tariffs on imports of Canadian agricultural products.
Trump initially viewed the agreement positively, but now views it negatively due to the escalation of his conflict with Carney over American claims to Greenland.
This week, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, the US president said that "Canada lives thanks to the United States", and Carney responded that Canada "can be an example that the world does not have to bow to autocratic tendencies".
Trump later withdrew an invitation for Carney to join his "Peace Committee" he is forming to try to resolve conflicts around the world.
He has previously repeatedly criticized Canada for its sovereignty and proposed that it join the USA as the 51st federal state, which is why Washington is putting pressure on Greenland.
