Lebanese army: Nine people, including two officers and a soldier, killed in Israeli attacks

The Lebanese army said nine people, including two officers and a soldier, were killed in Israeli strikes today, just days after Israel and Lebanon reached a new ceasefire agreement.

According to a statement from the army, a brigadier general, a captain and one soldier were killed this morning in an Israeli attack on a road near the town of Nabatieh.

In a second attack, on the village of Saksakiya, also in southern Lebanon, six people were killed and four were wounded, media reported.

"The continued, deliberate and repeated Israeli aggression against Lebanon, its people and its army only strengthens our resolve, faith and determination," the army said in a statement.

The army claims that Israel's goal with the attacks is to "thwart all efforts to reach a solution that would restore stability, establish a comprehensive ceasefire and lead to an Israeli withdrawal from the occupied Lebanese territories."

Israel and the Lebanese government have reached a truce with the help of the United States (US) for the last time. Beirut claims that the Lebanese militant pro-Iranian movement Hezbollah, which rejected the ceasefire agreement, has dragged Lebanon back into war.

The attacks came a day after Lebanon's president and prime minister criticized Iran for opposing the latest ceasefire agreement with Israel, saying Tehran should not use Lebanon as a "bargaining coin" with Washington.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced today that after Lebanese President Joseph Aoun's comments, "one would think that Iran has occupied a fifth of Lebanon, displaced a quarter of the Lebanese people and is bombing his country every day."

"If Lebanon were a negotiating trump card for Iran, we would have had an agreement a long time ago. Save Lebanon from its true enemy, Mr. President," Aragchi told him.

The latest conflict between Israel and Lebanon began on March 2, when Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel, two days after the Iran-Iraq war began.

Israel has since carried out a ground invasion of Lebanon that has displaced more than a million people.
