A story of love and darkness

The story of the childhood of Amos Oz, the famous Israeli writer, and his upbringing during the early days of the young state of Israel describes the relationship between young Oz and his mother, as well as his first literary steps.

Amos recalls his childhood, with his mother Fanja and father Ari, Eastern European Jews. He was an only child and very close to his mother, who often told him stories from her childhood, mostly with sad or violent endings. He describes how on November 29, 1947, his parents and the whole neighborhood gathered around the only radio and how they heard the news that the UN General Assembly had passed a decision on the formation of a Jewish state, a Palestinian state and Jerusalem as a free city under international administration. Amos' parents were overjoyed. However, civil war will break out in Palestine soon after. His father volunteers to fight in the Israeli-Arab War in 1948, and Amos and the other children are recruited to help. Fanja falls into severe depression, she can neither sleep nor eat. Amos and Arias try to help her. After a brief recovery, she goes to Tel Aviv to visit her sister and kills herself there with an overdose of medication...

The script of the film is based on the autobiographical novel of the same name by the Israeli writer Amos Oz and is the directorial debut of the famous actress Natalie Portman.
