Kumail, a Pakistani stand-up comedian lives in Chicago and tries to build his career while dealing with his family's traditional expectations of an arranged marriage.
Everything gets complicated when he meets Emilia, a student with whom he begins a relationship.
Their love faces challenges due to cultural differences, but the situation becomes even more difficult when Emilia contracts a mysterious illness and ends up in a medically induced coma. Kumail faces dilemmas between his family, his love for Emilia and his unexpected relationship with her parents.
The film is inspired by the real life events of Kumail Nandjiani and his wife Emilia V. Gordon, who co-wrote the screenplay with him. This film received extremely positive reviews and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
