It is the first day of application of the new Law on the Protection of the Population from Infectious Diseases, which foresees rigorous fines for violating orders to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

Fines from 100 to even 20 thousand euros are foreseen for not wearing masks indoors and in public transport, violation of physical distance and other measures.

The Vijesti Television team checked how market inspectors control compliance with the measures in stores and asked citizens what they thought about the new fines.

After the morning controls, market inspector Ratko Bulatović went on another tour around noon, in order to check whether the prescribed measures are being followed on the first day of application of the amended Act on the Protection of the Population from Infectious Diseases.

One of the stores in the city center was the target of the control.

After registration, Bulatović checked whether customers and workers are wearing masks, whether distance is being maintained, whether there is disinfectant at the entrance...

Everything was fine, so there were no grounds for punishment.

As of last night, inspectors have been given free rein to impose heavy fines on anyone who does not comply with the measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Some of the prescribed fines are: From 100 to 2.000 euros, all citizens will pay if they do not keep their distance and do not wear a mask indoors and in public transport. Entrepreneurs are threatened with fines from 350 to 6.000 euros, and companies and their directors from 200 to even 20.000. In addition to a fine, companies and entrepreneurs can be imprisoned for up to six months.

By the way, inspectors already checked compliance last night, as soon as the changes to the law came into force.
