Additives are substances that are added to food products during the technological process for better properties and to keep the product fresh. Their use is allowed, just don't overdo it, said Dejan Jančić from CETI in "Colors of the Morning".
Jančić says that consumers can notice a greater presence of additives, so the use of caramel, which is used to color flour, and the sale of such a product as integral can be a problem with bread and bakery products.
"Integral bread can be recognized because on the cross-section from the middle of the bread we see the remains of cereal grains, which are characteristic of whole grain flour," said Jančić.
The use of food additives is specially controlled for products intended for feeding infants and young children.
"Since 2016, both in the European Union and in our country, labeling is mandatory for products that use synthetic artificial colors (red, yellow, orange), because these colors can affect children's attention and activity. We recommend that parents especially they take care when consuming candies. Are additives marked E102, E104, E110, and from E120 to 129, present in the product because excessive consumption of these products can lead to hyperactivity in children," said Jančić.
It indicates that it should be taken into account that certain additives such as grapevine or sulfur dioxide can cause certain allergic reactions, so people who are hypersensitive or have some known allergic reactions must be careful when reading the composition of food.
