The executive director of the Safe Women's House, Ljiljana Raičević, said that during the holidays they received a "normally large number" of calls.
"He's happy that we didn't have anyone new at the shelter, it wasn't anything unusually sharp, strong, dangerous. There were a few cases that had to be reported to the police, however, the women didn't want to. It's attempted rape and it's one of the more serious types of violence , where usually women will not report, because they are not sure how the police will do it, how much the abuser will actually get or not get at all. She said that over the past ten days there had been eleven calls that required her to go to the office or meet with the victim. "Correspondence via inbox or messages, there were a lot of them, I didn't even count. But that's normal," she added.
Raičević clarified that a bad financial situation, alcohol, drugs and jealousy are the most common "triggers" when it comes to domestic violence.
She stated that last year there were 76 women and about 50 children in the shelter, and that 770 women called or came to the office.
"It is curious that a few men also came forward, but these are negligible percentages. But they came forward, overcame their shame, and came forward for some legal help," she said.
