An unusual sight in the Zabjelo settlement in Podgorica. Barn swallows occupied the construction site of one building and built numerous nests. Given that it is the largest known colony of this protected species, the Environmental Protection Agency appealed to the environmental inspection with a request to suspend construction work.
It is not yet known whether this will happen, and ornithologist Darko Saveljić explained for Boje jutra how this happened.
"There are several types of swallows in Montenegro, the most famous of which are the urban and rural ones, and these are the swallows that nest on balconies, country houses, barns, and there is this type of swallow that nests in a way that digs holes on the banks of rivers or in excavations - in this case, the mentioned residential buildings," the Environmental Protection Agency added.
