In Montenegro, so many people die from cancer because the disease is detected at a late stage. No matter how hard we try to educate ourselves and the state to procure the best medicines, when the disease is detected at a late stage, the results are very modest. We can prolong the lives of these people for a certain period of time, but we cannot cure them, said oncologist Dr. Nevenka Lukovac Janjić in Colors of the Morning.

Montenegro is in fourth place on the list of countries with the highest number of deaths from cancer.

Lukovac Janjić says that the Institute of Oncology has known for a long time that these data are like that.

"Our guest appearances in the media are not that rare. This table, which was presented in this way, received some resonance that I have not seen before. I was a little disappointed as someone who has been in the health care system for 20 years with the citizens' thinking that the health care system is to blame because the Black Gora is in fourth place," said Lukovac Janjić.

He points out that first we need to see what we do to avoid getting sick and what we do to detect the disease early.

"None of the people started from that, but from the fact that we have bad systems, doctors, medicines... When a symptom appears, we ignore it for a long time, we do not respond to calls for screening. In Montenegro, there is screening for breast cancer , colon, cervix," she stated.

He says that the disease must be detected at an early stage, and that the health system can help.

"But we have to be conscientious, take care of lifestyles, and where the state gives us support, i.e. invites us to screening and how to respond. There is also a vaccine against cancer, less known is the vaccine against hepatitis B , the HPV vaccine. Vaccinate your girls, because in nine out of 10 cases, cervical cancer is caused by the Human Papillomavirus. The attitude towards health should exist even when we don't have symptoms, some tumors only show symptoms at an advanced stage," said Lukovac Janjić.
