The devastating statistics from the roads are followed by those in the railway traffic. In the past six years, 21 people died on the tracks, 10 of them last year. In addition to illegal railway crossings, it is also alarming from the safety point of view that railway crossings are often not in operation. Because of all this, the Ministry of Transport launched an educational campaign "Safety starts with you".
Annually, over 50 accidents occur on the railway, which often end fatally. The devastating statistics show that almost half of the total number of people killed on the rails in the past six years died last year.
The causes of the nearly 320 accidents that have occurred in the past six years on Montenegrin railways are diverse, and in almost half of the cases, it is about crossing the tracks in an illegal place. In addition, from the safety aspect, it is alarming that level crossings often do not work.
The reconstruction of the railroad and railroad crossings should begin in the middle of next year, and the Minister of Transport and Maritime Affairs, Filip Radulović, announces the installation of a protective fence at the railway station in Podgorica to prevent the crossing of the tracks. In the meantime, the authorities will work to raise awareness among citizens and drivers as part of the "Safety starts with you" campaign.
