A new member, Pan, a search dog, joined the Nikšić Protection and Rescue Service.
"It's a search dog in the ruins, his name is Pan and he's 20 months old, a German shepherd, he's already done a lot of training and passed a lot of licenses in 20 months, and now the final license is left with his handler, i.e. with me, to pass when colleagues from Slovenia will come," Luka Bijelović from the Nikšić Protection and Rescue Service told TV Vijesti.
Bijelović is said to be inseparable from his new colleague, and Pan is currently the only dog trained for ruins in Montenegro.
"I've been doing this job for 6-7 years, I have a dog in the Mountain Avalanche Service, and this is my dog for ruins, so I'm not unfamiliar with it, but it's a huge job, responsibility for every day you work with him, there are no working hours , you simply have to work," Bijelović said.
However, although the work is inevitable, the Montenegrin protection and rescue services still lack equipment and training, which has been shown recently.
"The earthquake was in the early hours of the morning and we immediately received calls from colleagues in the region because they know that we don't have dogs, they know that we don't have drones with thermal cameras that can do something, they know that we don't have ibrophones, geophones to find victims under the ruins and immediately called us to see if there are any vulnerable people, so we should go, because we are not ready for these situations," explains Bijelović.
