Since the beginning of the application of the Law on Montenegrin Citizenship, that is, from May 5, 2008 until today, a total of 30.409 requests for admission to Montenegrin citizenship have been accepted, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MUP) told Television News.

Over half of the passports, i.e. 15.199, were granted according to Article 11 of the Law, on the basis of family reunification, and to which persons who have been married to a Montenegrin citizen for at least three years and have legally and continuously resided in Montenegro for at least five years before submitting the application - can be granted Montenegrin citizenship.

During this period, various governments granted more than two and a half thousand honorary citizenships. At the same time, during 16 years, a considerable number of citizens renounced their Montenegrin citizenship.

"According to the electronic records kept in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, since the beginning of the application of the Law on Montenegrin Citizenship, a total of 2.939 requests for loss of Montenegrin citizenship have been accepted at the request of the party - by discharge," said the MUP.

The Ministry of Interior told TV Vijesta that there are currently 2.274 applications for the acquisition of Montenegrin citizenship by admission. This issue has been brought up again due to the demands of the Democratic People's Party (DNP) and the New Serbian Democracy (NSD) to sign an agreement with Serbia and introduce dual citizenship.

For DNP Milan Knežević, this is one of the conditions for further support to the government of Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, who said last week that it is a shame that Montenegro gives up its children and that there are about 100 such cases, and later softened the announcement by saying that change the Law on Citizenship only after all protective legal mechanisms have been provided.

The opposition has said that it will strongly oppose the introduction of dual citizenship because, as they say, it would lead to ethnic engineering, political domination of Serbia over Montenegro and its disappearance.
