More than 100 cows in Montenegro are infected with the bacteria that causes cow fever, and at least 50 cows are waiting for euthanasia, Vladimir Đaković, director of the Administration for Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Affairs, told TV News.
That the numbers are even higher is indicated by the information of the veterinary inspector from Nikšić, Slavica Sužum, that at least 50 head are ready for euthanasia in that municipality alone.
In Nikšić, 10 farms were infected with kyu fever, but not the farm of Predrag Jakić from Šipačn, who is well versed in the situation.
"What is happening today regarding the fever in Montenegro is not just my opinion, but that of us farmers, that the sole culprits are the Ministry of Agriculture and the Veterinary Administration. Until the day when there was a case of buried blood in the parish, no one spoke up In my opinion, they were late with the vaccines and neglected the disease. This is a fire that can hardly be extinguished," said Jakić.
While he fears for the future of the dairy industry, Jakić does not spare the authorities at the bar either.
"No one is calling us, no one is calling us. No one is coming to show us how to prevent it... I am telling you what is happening here in my opinion - that huge mistakes have been made, that as far as kyu fever is concerned, the two largest municipalities have been hit which are the strongest in terms of milk production. They directly hit the heart of the dairy industry in Montenegro," said Jakić.
Authorities are still looking for safe locations to bury the euthanized necks. In Nikšić, they are waiting for an expert assessment and the Government's opinion in two days.
"Those locations must be far from houses and water sources and, on the other hand, we ask that they be state locations. I hope that the locations that we proposed yesterday will be adequate, but we do not want to give any information about them before the authorities The authorities do not answer that they meet the conditions even before we send them to the government, so the government accepts those locations," said Milanka Radulović, secretary for environmental protection in the municipality of Nikšić.
In Danilovgrad, too, infected cows on farms await euthanasia. At the meeting with Đaković, the location where they will be buried has not been defined even today.
"Is it possible that at 13 thousand and 812 kilometers, the state cannot solve it. In Danilovgrad and Nikšić, we wait for a month for the infected throats to be removed. They continue to spread the infection, infecting other throats," said Radulović.
The infection with kyu fever also spreads among people.
"In Montenegro, out of 15 cases of Q fever registered in September, 11 were reported in the municipality of Nikšić, 3 in Danilovgrad and one in Podgorica. In 14 cases, it was about people who were professionally in contact with colored animals, while in one person up to now the method of exposure has not been determined," the Institute for Public Health (IJZ) announced.
The IJZ says that currently none of the patients require hospital treatment and that they do not expect a larger number of infected people in the coming period.
