The Directorate for Inspection Affairs moved almost 11.000 motor vehicles last year, compared to 2023 when that number was around 3.000. The parking situation in Podgorica remains challenging, and Branko Kovačević, director of the Directorate, told Boje jutra on TV Vijesti that the main goal is to solve the problem in the city center, where the situation is most critical.
"The biggest problem is the discrepancy between the number of vehicles and parking spaces. The capital currently has around 7.000 parking spaces, while the number of registered vehicles exceeds 100.000, which causes traffic chaos," said Kovačević.
The construction of prefabricated garages is planned at several locations in Podgorica, including the areas behind the Beko Department Store and near the Sahad Kula Tower, and an increase in fines for illegal parking has also been announced, which would cost road users double.
"The fine for parking in a prohibited place is 60 euros, and if the vehicle moves the spider, another 60 euros are added. For parking in undesignated parking spaces, the fine is five euros. In the future, the fines will be doubled, which means the fine could increase to around 250 euros," Kovačević explained.
One of the future measures that can be expected is the use of "claws" that would be placed on vehicles that have not paid for parking, thus preventing the vehicle from moving until the debt is settled.
Kovačević finally pointed out that there is a shortage of traffic inspectors, but that new inspectors will be hired in the coming period.
