Brain health is often a topic we only think about in older age, but recognizing early signs of problems with memory and mental function is crucial for timely response.
Neurologist Dr. Sanja Gluščević from the Clinical Center of Montenegro, appearing on TV Vijesti's Boje jutra, emphasized the importance of education and early recognition of signs of dementia, so that we can act in a timely manner.
Normal changes in old age
Aging naturally brings certain changes in memory, but how do you recognize the line between "normal" forgetfulness and what could be cause for concern?
Normally: Forget where you left your keys, but remember later.
Worrying: You don't remember an important conversation or activity even when reminded.
Mild cognitive impairment and dementia
Mild cognitive impairment is considered a condition between natural aging and dementia. People with this disorder often have difficulty with memory, but retain the ability to function in everyday life. However, symptoms such as the inability to recall important activities or conversations without assistance may indicate the potential development of dementia.
Risk factors for accelerated brain aging
A number of factors can contribute to accelerated brain aging, including:
- Chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure,
- Bad habits such as excessive alcohol consumption and smoking,
- Physical inactivity and isolation.
According to Gluščević, the latest research shows that up to 45% of dementia cases can be prevented by addressing risk factors. Regular physical activity, learning new skills, quality sleep and socialization are key to maintaining mental health. It is recommended that we be physically active at least three times a week for 30 minutes.
Stress, genetics and brain health
Chronic stress and depression significantly increase the risk of developing dementia, while genetics only play an important role in rare cases, such as familial forms of the disease. Although the aging process brings inevitable changes, adopting healthy habits can significantly affect the preservation of mental abilities. If you notice symptoms such as pronounced forgetfulness or difficulty performing daily activities, consult a doctor, concludes Gluščević.
