USSCG begins campaign to collect signatures for referendum on construction of state-owned apartments

The Union of Free Trade Unions of Montenegro has started a campaign to collect signatures to enable the calling of a state referendum on the construction of state-owned apartments, which would be rented out at affordable prices.

The first public forum will be held in Bar on January 30, with a symbolic opening of the signing booths from 17 to 21 p.m., said Srđan Keković, Secretary General of the Union of Free Trade Unions, on TV Vijesti's Boje jutra.

The initiative, he pointed out, is based on models like the one in Vienna, where most apartments are state-owned. The goal is to provide affordable housing for citizens who cannot afford to borrow, with fixed rental prices that track inflation.

"The Union has been demanding, almost since its inception, that the Montenegrin fund for solidarity housing construction be nationalized and that this story be started. We are not revealing hot water here. This is a story that has been present for a century in Austria, and of course in other. Various European countries, but specifically, let's say the example of Vienna, where in Vienna alone, I think up to 70% of total apartments are state-owned. This shows that this project is sustainable and makes sense," says Keković.

To call a referendum, 55.000 signatures of citizens with the right to vote are required.
