School security guards are not a solution to peer violence, but they can help in emergency situations.
Kristina Mihailović, executive director of the Parents Association, said on "Colors of Morning" on TV Vijesti that security guards should not be expected to resolve cases of peer violence, because in most cases it does not occur in their presence.
"A security guard can hardly deal with peer violence. It is an illusion if someone thinks that they will solve problems between children. Most such conflicts are not physical in nature, but rather more subtle types of violence - psychological, emotional or digital, which security guards cannot recognize or prevent," says Mihailović.
However, their presence, Mihailović points out, can contribute to emergency intervention in cases of serious physical conflicts or preventing unknown persons from entering school premises.
"When physical violence occurs, they are there to react, separate the conflicting parties and prevent more serious consequences. Their task is also to take care of school property and reduce vandalism, which is also on the rise," adds Mihailović.
According to a survey conducted via the Megafon app, 62 percent of citizens expect improvement, while 38 percent believe the situation will remain the same.
