The story about cemeteries shows that in Montenegro everything can turn into a problem, which inevitably leads to new divisions.
Ownership of cemeteries has so far been regulated by the property law and the state has owned them. A recent proposal by a New Serbian Democracy MP to amend the law and make cemeteries the property of municipalities in the future has caused a public uproar. The informal civic association STEGA has argued that the intention of the amendment is to transfer the majority of cemeteries to the ownership of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
And while the ruling Europe Movement now believes that there are much more important issues than cemeteries, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić, whose government initially supported the amendment, withdrew it today and announced the adoption of a special law on cemeteries.
