The Basic Court in Podgorica accepted the lawsuit of Elzana Hrković from Pljevlja and ruled that the state of Montenegro is responsible for air pollution in Pljevlja.

The court ordered the state to compensate Hrković for non-pecuniary damage, her representative, lawyer Danilo Vujanović, told Television Vijesti.

"The verdict is a huge victory for Elzana Hrković, whose life has been unbearable for decades due to polluted air. Much more important than the money awarded to her is the message sent by the court - that it is ready to respond to the most important demands in the field of human rights and environmental protection," said Vujanović.

Hrković sued the state in December 2023, and many Pljevlja residents, who have been waiting for the outcome of the proceedings, are interested in following in her footsteps.

Vujanović stated in the lawsuit that Hrković has lived in Pljevlja continuously for more than 20 years and is exposed to unbearable air pollution every day, because the state has not taken appropriate measures that were within its jurisdiction to protect the environment, namely air quality in Pljevlja.
