Nine people have died on the country's roads since the beginning of the year, which is fewer than in the same period last year, said Lija Janjušević, head of the traffic safety department at Boje jutra on TV Vijesti, and over the weekend alone, more than 9 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or refusing to be tested.
"What is also worrying is the very low percentage of drivers and passengers in vehicles who use seat belts, and all research shows that wearing a seat belt reduces the chance of serious bodily injury and death by up to 50%," says Janjušević.
The amendments to the Traffic Safety Law are more rigorous, and the goal of high fines for some violations is to raise traffic culture and introduce order on the roads. Fines will amount to up to 1000 euros or 60 days in prison.
"We proposed an increase in fines in general because we have a really large number of repeat offenders, which led us to the conclusion that the existing penalties have not had any effect. Therefore, the goal of punishment is to ensure that those who are sanctioned do not commit a violation in the future, or to deter other participants from committing violations," adds Janjušević.
Police officers will be able, among other things, for the first time to confiscate a vehicle in the event of a serious traffic offense, provided that the driver has been convicted of the most serious traffic offenses in the previous two years, and "light electric vehicles" or electric scooters will also be regulated.
