Podgorica Waterworks records 54 percent of losses in the network, and the main causes are the deterioration of the water network, lack of reservoir capacity, as well as illegal and excessive consumption, said Maša Knežević from Podgorica Waterworks in an interview for Boje jutra on Vijesti Television.
"We have 125 kilometers of asbestos cement pipelines in the capital city and we are aware of the fact that they need replacement or reconstruction, however, it is a very demanding process and does not depend solely on us. On average, the age of the pipes in the capital city is about 35 years, and the oldest pipe in Podgorica was installed 70 years ago. We control the water daily through our laboratory, so of course the water in Podgorica is safe to drink," Knežević pointed out.
The Waterworks Department also states that the reconstruction of the pipes is being carried out through the reconstruction of roads, which is under the jurisdiction of the Agency for Construction and Development of Podgorica.
"When we talk about specific activities for the coming period, we have planned to replace the dilapidated pipeline in the Dajbabe settlement, about 650 meters long, as well as minor reconstructions in the Zagorić and Doljani settlements," said Knežević.
From the beginning of the year to the end of March, 1.381 citizens of Podgorica submitted a complaint request due to increased water bills, and the Water Authority accepted 284 of that number.
The Water Authority also notes that they have simplified the procedure for changing the name of the user, and that copies of the property deed and purchase agreement can now be submitted instead of the originals.
