The Constitutional Court declared unconstitutional the Decision of the Nikšić Municipal Assembly, which celebrates May 12, the Day of Saint Basil of Ostrog, as the city's feast day.
The judges of the Constitutional Court, as reported by Televizija Vijesti, assessed that the Nikšić Municipal Assembly did not make the decision in accordance with the Law on Local Self-Government, that is, that the local parliament did not previously obtain the consent of the Government.
In this way, the councilors, in the court's opinion, violated the constitutional principle of legality.
The decision to grant Nikšić the title of city was made in April 2023 by councilors from the ruling coalition, while the opposition was of the opinion that the introduction of the title discriminated against non-Orthodox citizens.
