Democratic Montenegro MP Momčilo Leković said that the arrest of former police official Duško Golubović is a reflection of the way the security sector and the former regime functioned before 2020.
While appearing on TV Vijesti's Boje jutra, he pointed out the disparity between his income and luxury assets, stating that proceedings have been initiated against 33 police officers due to suspicious assets.
"Finally, checks and actions have started. This is something that citizens have demanded – a system without corruption and crime," said Leković.
When asked about Golubović's alleged connections with individuals from the current government, Leković replied that there was no concrete evidence for this, and recalled confirmed connections with former regime officials, including Milo Đukanović and Zoran Lazović. He pointed to previously published transcripts that, according to him, confirm Golubović's political protection in previous years.
Leković rejected claims that nothing has changed after the change of government, stating that the current institutions have shown a willingness to prosecute those responsible. He believes that claims about the unchanged system come from the opposition, in order to discredit progress.
"Every other day someone is arrested – but based on evidence, not politics."
Speaking about reforms, Leković announced the Democrats' support for amendments to four key laws, recalling that they had been actively proposing improvements last year, especially in the area of the fight against corruption. He expects the amendments to be adopted by the summer.
Leković expressed dissatisfaction with the work of the Committee for Comprehensive Electoral Reform, stating that there is a lack of serious cooperation between the government and the opposition. He pointed out the Šavnik case as an example of obstruction and the lack of political will to resolve long-standing problems.
Leković has repeatedly stressed that Montenegro must free itself from the legacy of division and crime if it wants a European future. He called on all political actors to focus on concrete solutions, not mutual accusations.
"We can only bring Montenegro into the EU if we act together, reconciled and committed to reforms," said Leković.
