The Socialist People's Party (SNP) is entering the pre-election period for internal party elections.

The candidacy of Vice President Dragoslav Šćekić is already certain, while the candidacy of current leader Vladimir Joković is also possible.

Whether the two will enter a direct duel – and who will lead the SNP for the next four years – will be known at the congress, which is expected during the summer.

Who will enter the race for the new leader of the SNP? – is a question to which the answer is still not known with certainty.

Several candidacies are expected, with the candidacy of party vice president Dragoslav Šćekić already certain, while the candidacy of current SNP leader Vladimir Joković is possible.

If both are candidates, their duel will represent a key battle for the SNP leader. The final decision on the new leadership will be known by the end of the summer, when the congress, according to the statute, must be held.

Although Joković has not yet officially declared his candidacy, unofficial information from the party leadership suggests that Joković will accept his candidacy for another - third - term, because he has support within the party. His possible re-election as head of the SNP would mark the continuity of the current political course, but at the same time could open up space for new polarization within the party. While the official confirmation of the current leader's candidacy is still awaited, Šćekić has already publicly come forward with a clear message that he will run.

"I will run for president of the Socialist People's Party, as I have already announced. I did not make the decision overnight, but after numerous conversations with colleagues from all over Montenegro, namely with members of municipal committees who have the right to propose candidates for party presidents at the congress. These are people who demand that their voices be heard and that the party return to the fundamental values that created it," said Šćekić.

Šćekić recalls that he was nominated for the presidency of the SNP in both 2017 and 2021, but then, as he says, he withdrew his candidacy in the interest of party unity, which he will not do this time.

On the other hand, Joković's third candidacy was recently made possible by the SNP Statutory Commission, which removed any dilemma about possible restrictions on his continued leadership of the party.

While Šćekić bases his candidacy on, as he states, clear signals from the field, there are those within the party who dispute the strength of his support.

The true picture will only be clear when the SNP Main Board formally opens the candidacy process and sets the date for the congress - which, as things stand, will be crucial for the future direction, but also the unity of this party, which has split many times so far, precisely when some candidates for leader were elected, or not elected, and new political entities emerged from it.
