Mojkovac, like most municipalities in northern Montenegro, is facing long-standing problems – unemployment, population outflow and poor infrastructure. While citizens are looking for answers, the local government is highlighting development projects that could bring about a turnaround. Special expectations are linked to the announcements of investments from the United Arab Emirates, where the name of investor Mohamed Alabar is increasingly mentioned as a potential partner in the transformation of the municipality.
Although it still faces challenges such as emigration, unemployment and poor infrastructure, Mojkovac has high hopes for development projects. Possible investments from the United Arab Emirates are particularly noteworthy, and the mayor of the municipality, Vesko Delić, spoke on Boje jutra on Vijesti TV about concrete plans for the development of a ski resort on Bjelasica and a tourist complex on the banks of the Tara River.
"We are completing the main project that will cost several million euros, I even think over five million euros, and all of that together with Bjelasica, with the construction of these hotels in Podbišće and with this replica of medieval Brskovo, I believe that it would be a great product not only for Mojkovac, but also for the north of Montenegro, and also for the whole of Montenegro," said Delić.
While possible investments are being announced, citizens are most concerned about poor roads and the reconstruction of bridges destroyed in floods. The critical road to Đurđevića Tara, important for tourism, is not yet fully passable due to long-term works, and Delić points out that finances are the main reason for the problem.
"The entire north of Montenegro has been faced with the lack of major investment cycles in recent decades. As a small municipality, we cannot do everything on our own without the help of the state. We hope that in the coming period, the state will show not only in words but also in deeds that it cares about the north," said Delić.
The local government clearly states that the north of Montenegro, rich in natural resources and tourism potential, can become an engine of economic and tourism growth - not only for this region, but also for the entire country.
