A completely ordinary working day in a Podgorica supermarket turned into an incredible life story that many will remember for a long time. A birth took place among the store shelves. The main role in this event was played by City Market employee Olivera Šišević, who showed composure and courage in moments when every second mattered.
"The day started like any other, usually. Nothing foretold that something like this would happen," begins Olivera, who now, a few days after the event, remembers everything with a smile.
When she heard screams and noticed a commotion among the customers, Olivera came out of her department.
"I asked my colleague what was happening, and she just told me - she was in labor. At that moment, I ran, took the keys with the intention of taking her to the emergency room, but when I returned - my water had already broken. There was no time left for anything other than help on the spot. Measures had to be taken, there were so many people there, everyone was in shock.
The situation itself took place in an incredibly narrow space between two rafts, and Olya had no medical equipment - only instinct and her heart.
"The only thing I had on hand was a jacket. I put it under the pregnant woman, someone brought a crate for her to sit on. I shouted, 'Get down, so you don't hurt the baby.'"
The pregnant woman, as Olja says, was extremely calm and brave.
"At that moment, the baby was already out. She cried loudly. It was a beautiful little girl, healthy and strong. Everyone was in shock, but at the same time delighted."
The emergency medical team soon arrived and took over further care of the baby and mother.
"I didn't even touch the umbilical cord, I left that to them. The most important thing to me was that they were both okay."
Olja knew what to do at the most crucial moment.
"I'm not a panicker. In moments like these, I don't think, I just react. Later on, I get nervous, but at that time I was completely focused. All that mattered to me was that the baby and mother were okay."
When asked if she views her job and the people around her differently today, Olja answers honestly:
"This reminds me of what we forget. Unfortunately, nowadays, few people pay attention to these things, that someone needs help, no matter in what sense, we have become a little, I would say, cruel, without feelings. And the speed of life leads us like this, I don't know what's happening, but I think this is the meaning of life. I think we all need to turn to each other, to give love to each other, because that's also the meaning of life, and everything else is fleeting," Olivera concludes.
