It is still unknown how much Montenegro will be taxed under the cross-border carbon adjustment mechanism, known as CBAM, which comes into effect on January 1, 2026.
The Ministry of Energy and Mining says that in communication with the European Commission, the door is open for respecting the specificities of Montenegro.
"In direct communication with representatives of the EC and the energy community last week, we are convinced that, in some way, our specificities will be taken into account. And most of all, our results that we have achieved in the previous period in the field of fulfilling obligations arising from European integration," said Minister Admir Šahmanović.
Today, he did not want to comment on the issue of possible liability regarding the commissioning of the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant, stating that he would make a statement on the matter after the Ministry's commission completes its part of the work.
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Electric Power Company of Montenegro, Milutin Đukanović, confirms that the desulfurization system has yet to be put into trial operation, and that the ecological reconstruction has not yet been completed.
"This was a major overhaul and in order to connect these devices, we need to have stable operation of the TPP. The chimney must work well, the boiler must work well, the turbine must work well, and now in the coming period we will connect these devices that form the essence of the ecological reconstruction," he said.
In Pljevlja, water was released into the new bed of the Ćehotina River today, which, as previously announced by the Coal Mine, prevented the shutdown of the Mine and the Pljevlja Thermal Power Plant, and ensured the energy stability of Montenegro until at least 2041.
"Today, our miners can take a step back as we enter a zone of safer work for both EPCG and the mine. What was achieved today is an extremely big deal, we completed a project that was designed for 18 months in eight months," said the director of the Pljevlja Coal Mine, Nemanja Laković.
In parallel with the release of water into the new stream, specialized procedures for extracting fish from the tunnel of the old riverbed were also initiated.
