For the first time since the split of the unified DPS, Bijelo Polje welcomed the new year with a crisis of the ruling majority. Due to the absence of councilors from the ruling Bosniak Party at the Assembly session, the budget was not adopted, and the Municipality entered a temporary financing regime. The President of the Municipal Board of the ruling DPS, Elvir Zvrko, did not want to speculate whether that party would agree to cede the position of the Mayor to the Bosniak Party.
"We have not yet received official requests from the Bosniak Party, they probably want to define their requests through their party bodies. So I expect that talks on the problem of the functioning of the government will begin soon, if there are any problems at all," said Zvrko.
And there are certainly problems, claim the Bosniak Party. Their key complaints are that the Municipality, as they claim, did not apply to the Government for capital projects on time, but also that their requests were not taken into account when implementing local projects. That is why they are announcing a revision of the coalition agreement.
"We will have one platform on which we will put all our demands. The main and basic development of Bijelo Polje will be included in these demands, as we see it, as we want Bijelo Polje to develop in the coming period. If this is acceptable to the coalition partners, we will continue to cooperate, if not, we will look for an alternative," said Ernad Suljević, president of the BS Municipal Board.
Bijelo Polje, meanwhile, marked Liberation Day in World War II, and unlike previous years, this time there were no ribbons and no foundation stones.
"We have strived to ensure that the development of Bijelo Polje is not a matter of improvisation, but rather the result of planning, responsible management and cooperation - with the state, international partners, the economy and, most importantly, with citizens," said the Mayor of the Municipality, Petar Smolović (DPS).
Congratulations on the occasion of Bijelo Polje Day came from the highest state addresses, and before the ceremonial session, representatives of the Municipality, political and other organizations laid wreaths at the Monument to Fallen Soldiers. The highest municipal awards were also awarded - the Third January Awards - to the former Mayor of the Municipality, Tarzan Milošević, and to Radmila Radović, a chemistry teacher at the "Dušan Korać" Elementary School.
