It is the fourth day of flooding in Montenegro, and the current situation promises to be a mostly dry day ahead, so, according to data from the Institute for Hydrometeorology and Seismology, there will be rain only in lower areas in the south.
More favorable weather conditions should finally lead to the stabilization of the flood situation, which has been forcing citizens to evacuate for days and causing damage in several municipalities, most notably in Danilovgrad, where dozens of households have been evacuated.
Due to heavy rainfall and landslides, traffic on several roads in the country has been suspended.
The army will begin installing a pontoon bridge in Donja Gorica at around 10 a.m. today, in order to bridge this section and allow the Mareza to continue flowing unhindered towards the Morača, after which city services will continue cleaning.
The director of Podgorica's "Deponija" Aleksandar Božović admitted on "Boje jutra" on TV Vijesti that the floods revealed the depth of the problem that, among other things, led to this and called on state authorities to get involved.
Zoran Mikić, a member of parliament from the Civic Movement URA, also pointed out that the problem in the Mareza canal is a consequence of the irresponsible behavior of previous city administrations, but also of citizens.
"At DG Arena, we saw that a canal was completely covered over a stretch of practically 500 meters. What is very bad is that a large floodlight from a football stadium was installed in the middle of that canal. So we will have to look for an alternative canal, carry out some new work and get something done. The Agency for Construction and Development of Podgorica will be involved, the Ministry of Agriculture must be involved, the state must stand behind all of this, because this goes beyond the local level. The problem is that there are so many embankments and that someone received a building permit to install a floodlight from a football stadium on the canal itself. Let's see what construction facilities, auxiliary facilities that citizens installed and built on the canal itself," said Božović.
Mikić announced that he would request a control hearing in the Parliament and initiate all parliamentary mechanisms to determine responsibility.
"There is criminal liability for many people here - from investors who built in the Mareza Canal bed, to institutions that gave them building permits and urban planning and technical conditions, to unscrupulous individuals who dumped waste or built illegal dams on the canal. All of these people will have to answer in the coming period. We will especially have to see how responsible the relevant Ministry of Agriculture is, especially the Water Administration, which, among other things, should take care of this watercourse," Mikić said.
