Among the cases being handled by the Basic Prosecutor's Office in Podgorica, there is room for another one - against retired Supreme Court judge Rade Kovačević. Prosecutors are determining whether she recently testified falsely in the proceedings against the former president of the country's highest court, Vesna Medenica, her son Miloš and other defendants.
Kovačević claimed before the High Court in October last year that she had never received a wristwatch as a gift from Medenica. However, messages read in the courtroom during the proceedings cast doubt on her words.
This is because during their correspondence, Medenica and Kovačević talked about the watch, its value and appearance.
"The watch is beautiful, thank you again. I am so touched by the gesture. I sincerely hope that the item didn't have any impact. This is too expensive. You went too far, I have no way to reciprocate. My home jury likes it too," Kovačević and Medenica write in the correspondence.
Although she was moved in the correspondence, Kovačević claimed as a witness at the trial that she did not take the gift. However, that story was not convincing to special prosecutor Vukas Radonjić, who in October last year requested that proceedings be initiated against her for giving false testimony, which is why the case was referred to the Basic Prosecutor's Office.
"On this occasion, a case has been opened against the suspect RK for two criminal offenses - giving false testimony. The case is currently under investigation. In order to protect the interests of the proceedings, it is not possible to provide further details at this time," said the Basic State Prosecutor's Office in Podgorica.
During the trial, a member of the trial panel, Judge Boris Bulatović, pointed out the illogicality in Rade Kovačević's testimony, asking how it was possible that, on the one hand, she claimed that she had not even seen the brand of the watch, while in the message she thanked her for, as she stated, a luxurious gift and admitted that she did not know how to repay her then-superior.
