Abuse of anabolic steroids can have serious and long-term health consequences, especially for young people whose bodies are not yet fully developed. Taking artificial testosterone disrupts the natural hormonal balance, which can lead to reduced or complete cessation of the production of one's own hormone.
This further carries the risk of infertility, disorders in the development of sexual characteristics, as well as a number of other problems - from damage to the liver and cardiovascular system to serious psychological changes such as aggression, depression and anxiety.
It is especially dangerous that some consequences may be permanent, even after cessation of use.
An additional problem is the fact that young people often do not know what they are actually putting into their bodies, because many preparations are purchased illegally and without any quality control.
Interlocutors warn: Consequences could be permanent
The interlocutors of Boja jutra on TV Vijesti were Dr. Dalibor Ćorić, a sports medicine specialist from the Podgorica Health Center, and Dr. Mitar Delević, a sanitary chemistry specialist from the Institute of Public Health.
Dr. Ćorić warned of serious hormonal disorders caused by steroid use:
"The essence of normal functioning of the body is maintaining hormonal balance. When we inject artificial testosterone, the body receives a signal that it has enough of it and stops producing the natural hormone."
He particularly highlighted the risk of lasting consequences:
"If the gonads are not stimulated for a long period of time, permanent loss of function can occur, which directly leads to infertility."
Dr. Delević pointed out the problem of illegal procurement and an uncontrolled market:
"Only one testosterone-based drug is registered in Montenegro, and it is available only by prescription. Everything else comes illegally, most often from foreign markets, without any quality control."
He also warned of additional health risks when using:
"These preparations are often administered intramuscularly, which carries additional risks – from infections to blood vessel damage, especially if used by people without medical knowledge."
Alarm for parents: How to recognize the problem
The increasing use of steroids among teenagers is a serious alarm for parents, who are often unaware of what is happening. A sudden and rapid change in physical appearance, especially a rapid increase in muscle mass, can be one of the first signs.
In addition, it is important to pay attention to changes in behavior – increased irritability, aggression, sudden mood swings, but also withdrawal or secrecy. Unknown preparations, ampoules, syringes or supplements of no clear origin can also arouse suspicion.
Experts advise open, non-judgmental conversations with children, as well as timely information about the risks. Education and support from the family are key in prevention, so that young people understand that there is no quick and safe path to an ideal appearance.
