While shoppers at markets are looking for local products, Montenegro still imports most of its food. At the same time, authorities say that the price and origin of food must be clearly marked.
Along with the question of origin, another dilemma often arises among consumers: Is there genetically modified food on the market? Authorities claim that there is none.
Joining the European Union will also bring new rules for Montenegro, which is currently harmonizing more than a hundred bylaws. What will apply to new genomic techniques and the possible labeling of future products will depend on the final European rules.
