The Director of the Directorate for Protection and Rescue, Miodrag Bešović, warned that Montenegro is entering the summer fire season with limited aviation capacity and an increased risk of large forest fires due to above-average temperatures and long dry periods.
As he stated in "Colors of Morning" on Vijesti Television, some of the existing helicopters in the system are not operational, while only a few of the three Air Tractor aircraft are currently in operation, and the rest are in the final stages of overhaul.
The system plans to include additional aircraft, including a larger Antonov aircraft, as well as the procurement of new helicopters and aircraft in the coming period.
He emphasized that in the event of major fires, support from international partners will continue to be counted on through the mechanisms of the European Union and NATO.
"If a situation arises where some fires cross a threshold that we cannot respond to on our own in the wilderness, I am sure that we will defend ourselves this fire season as well. And what is key and important to mention is that the government has reached a conclusion to purchase two helicopters and two aircraft with a payload of up to ten tons in the future," said Bešović.
