The state must protect media pluralism, because the media are not ordinary goods for sale. This is the key message of the new episode of the CDT podcast ''Action'', which discussed the announced changes in ownership of some media outlets from the United Group and their possible consequences for the Montenegrin media scene.
The Director of the Agency for Audiovisual Media Services, Sunčica Bakić, warned that Montenegro has not been protecting its media market for years, emphasizing that national frequencies are a limited public resource and that "principles that protect media pluralism must be contained in the law."
Media Center Director Goran Đurović said that institutions must determine who the real owners of the media are and protect the public interest, emphasizing that "this procedure must not be carried out without the serious involvement of all competent institutions."
CDT Program Director Milica Kovačević warned that the available information about potential buyers raises serious questions about the origin of capital and political connections, emphasizing that "this is not a matter of an ordinary transaction - media are not ordinary goods for sale."
The interlocutors agree that the protection of media pluralism is a matter of public interest, democratic standards and Montenegro's European path.
