Montenegro has established a supported housing service for people with disabilities for the first time, and the first four people are already using this service in the community. After spending several years in an institution for people with intellectual disabilities at the Public Institution "Komanski most", they moved to an apartment in Berane, where they were provided with support for a more independent life.
Guesting on Boje jutra on Vijesti Television, Director of the Directorate at the Ministry of Social Welfare, Family Care and Demography Amela Orahovac said that this is a historic step forward in the social protection system, as Montenegro is moving from institutional care to support for people with disabilities in their community.
"We are moving from a decade-old social policy approach, which involved caring for citizens who need help in residential institutions, to caring for a person in a specific community. This will mean a much more dignified, higher quality and better life for people with disabilities," said Orahovac.
