Janjušević: The new automatic radar control system has already begun to be implemented in Podgorica

The new system of automatic radar control has already begun to be implemented in Podgorica, while this method of traffic control will soon be introduced in the rest of Montenegro.

According to Ilija Janjušević, Head of the Road Traffic Safety Department, around 20 drivers have been fined for speeding in Podgorica so far.

"For now, we are of the opinion that we will not sanction drivers who exceed the speed limit by up to ten kilometers. And beyond that, there will still be a sanction," Janjušević said in "Colors of Morning" on TV Vijesti.

The Montenegrin police currently have 23 radars in circulation, while an additional 12 radars have been purchased and are expected to arrive.

Radars automatically record speeding, take photographs and videos of the vehicle, register license plates and information about the violation. After processing the data, the vehicle owner receives a notification about the violation at their home address.

"After the radar records the speeding, the data is automatically transferred to the tablet device that the police officer has. The speeding is processed, a search is performed to find out who the vehicle owner is, and if all conditions are met, a notification is sent to the vehicle owner," he explained.

The notification will arrive at your home address, while the police are also working on the possibility of electronic notification.

If the owner was not driving the vehicle, he or she is required to provide credible evidence of who was driving the vehicle within eight days.

"If you don't do this within eight days, you will be charged with a misdemeanor and there are minimum fines of 300 euros or more," he said.

The police will not announce the radar locations in advance. The devices can operate at night, and they also record the GPS location, as well as the distance at which the vehicle was recorded.

Police say the goal of the new system is to ensure that drivers comply with traffic regulations and to reduce the number of serious traffic accidents.
