Every second driver tested for psychoactive substances tested positive for drugs, the Police Department told Vijesti.
The responses from that institution state that in the period from January 1 to March 31, 2025, the traffic police tested 40.102 drivers for the presence of alcohol in their bodies, while 630 drivers were tested for the presence of psychoactive substances.
"During the aforementioned period, traffic police officers determined the presence of alcohol in the bodies of 2.138 drivers, while the presence of psychoactive substances in the bodies of 312 drivers... The most common psychoactive substances detected in drivers are cannabis and cocaine," the UP told the newspaper.
Of the total number of people sanctioned for this type of offense (alcohol and PAS), the police explain, 321 were young and novice drivers.
"Among the persons who committed the violations, there were more men than women," they added.
The Police Directorate states that cannabis and cocaine are the most common psychoactive substances detected in drivers.
"A total of 886 drivers who were driving under the influence of alcohol or psychoactive substances were deprived of their liberty... Among the prosecuted drivers were also repeat offenders... The highest measured level of alcohol in the body was even over 3g/kg," the responses from the institution it manages state. Lazar Scepanovic.
1.435 drivers fined for speeding
A total of 1 drivers were sanctioned for exceeding vehicle speed limits in the period from January 31 to March 2025, 1.435.
The Police Directorate announced that, as in previous years, they will conduct increased checks on traffic participants during the upcoming tourist season.
"Traffic police activities during the summer, when traffic frequency in our country is particularly high, will be carried out through both preventive and repressive measures and actions."
They also stated that they expect that, in addition to the presence of traffic patrols in the field, the innovations they proposed in the Draft Amendments to the Law on Road Traffic Safety, which is currently in the public debate phase, will contribute to increasing the level of traffic culture among road users.
"These amendments relate to increasing sanctions for certain violations, as well as tightening sanctions for returnees who have committed the most serious traffic violations in the last two years, while these amendments also relate to certain restrictions for young drivers."
They recalled that the Draft provides for a ban on the use of vehicles between 23 p.m. and 6 a.m. for drivers under the age of 21 and explained that, after analyzing traffic accidents in the past period, the police came to the conclusion that it is during this period that an increased number of traffic accidents with the most serious consequences involving drivers under the age of 21 occur.
"We believe that for this reason, the use of motor vehicles should be prohibited for drivers of this age during the specified period, which certainly represents a more predominant social interest than the restriction that exists in this case for drivers of this category whose job description includes driving. We note that this legal solution is not new and that it is also known in the legislation of a number of European countries. If the above-mentioned legal solution is adopted, it will not be possible for persons under the age of 21 to drive a vehicle from 23 p.m. to 6 a.m., regardless of the possession of certain certificates or similar documents."
They state that the intention of the police is that the new solutions in the Draft Amendments to the Law will greatly contribute to improving the overall situation in the field of road traffic and increasing awareness of the importance of respecting traffic regulations.
