Preserving reproductive health requires a systemic approach based on prevention, education and timely health care, the Ministry of Health (MZD) announced today.

As stated by the government department, World Sexual and Reproductive Awareness Day, which is celebrated on February 12, represents an opportunity to responsibly and well-arguedly highlight the importance of preserving sexual and reproductive health, as well as the challenges that continue to represent a serious public health problem in this area.

"Sexually transmitted infections are among the most widespread infectious diseases of modern times, both globally and in Montenegro. According to data from the World Health Organization, every day around a million people in the world become ill with a sexually transmitted infection. The consequences of these diseases often go beyond the acute phase of the disease and can permanently endanger reproductive health, quality of life and the general health of an individual," the statement reads.

The Ministry of Health said that the most common sexually transmitted infections include HPV (human papillomavirus), chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), genital herpes, hepatitis B and trichomoniasis.

"A particular challenge in their control is the fact that infections often occur without clearly expressed symptoms, and in some cases, symptoms may be completely absent. For this reason, unrecognized and untreated, these infections can lead to serious complications, including sterility, malignant diseases, spontaneous abortions and transmission of infection from mother to child. Preservation of reproductive health requires a systemic approach based on prevention, education and timely health care. Education on responsible sexual behavior, proper use of contraception, methods of prevention of sexually transmitted infections, as well as preserving the health of mother and child during pregnancy, is the foundation for long-term improvement of public health. Regular preventive examinations and organized screening programs, especially for early detection of cervical cancer, are key instruments in reducing morbidity and mortality," it states.

The Ministry of Health also said that every preventive gynecological examination represents an important step towards early detection of changes in the cervix and significantly increases the chances of successful treatment.

"Montenegro has been continuously implementing national screening programs for the prevention of cervical cancer, as well as the HPV vaccination program, for years. HPV vaccination began in September 2022 for girls, while it has been available to boys since February 2024. The primary target group includes girls and boys aged 9 to 14, when the effect of the vaccine is most pronounced, and vaccination is also available for the age groups 15 to 18, as well as 19 to 26. Improving sexual and reproductive health is not exclusively a medical issue, but also a matter of social responsibility, information and solidarity. Only through consistent application of preventive measures, continuous education and active participation of citizens is it possible to build a sustainable system that protects the health of current and future generations," it states.

They added that the Ministry of Health plays a key role in the creation and consistent implementation of public health policies, with special emphasis on strengthening preventive programs.

"Through strategic action and coordination of the health system, the Ministry confirms its commitment to preserving sexual and reproductive health as one of the public health priorities," the statement concludes.
