Minister of Culture and Media Tamara Vujović said that she was surprised with the narrative by which the artistic director of the Nikšić Theater, Janko Jelić, refused to perform the play "Exposed" NVU Bunt scena.
"The role of the theater is a continuous struggle for the emancipation of the entire society, and violence against women is a topic that unfortunately still burdens it and must not be relativized. Cultural institutions must recognize the importance of the independent scene and be open to offer the audience the opportunity to consume content created in the independent production, which deal with important and current social problems," announced Vujović.
Jelić announced that the topic of women's disenfranchisement is "worn out" for him, and that he thinks that "women discriminate." He said this in an email sent to the Bunt Independent Theater Stage, which is performing the play "Exhibition of Women".
"Running a cultural institution, choosing and creating cultural content and programs for the audience is a responsible job, which must be led by those who are aware of the importance of which culture can change things for the better and raise public awareness. The Nikšić Theater is not part of the institutional system under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Culture and the media, but the local self-government - Nikšić Municipality. As Fose said, art "allows us that which is foreign and unknown to shine clearly. Art is peace!" And we should all learn to respect that," concluded Vujović.
