Today, May 9, Victory Day over Fascism and Europe Day, was marked in Bijelo Polje by laying wreaths at the monument to fallen soldiers. Wreaths and flowers were laid on this occasion by delegations of the Municipality of Bijelo Polje, members of UBNOR and anti-fascists, OBNOR, as well as representatives of the political parties of the Democratic Party of Socialists, the Bosniak Party, the European Alliance, the United Reform Action URA and the Socialist People's Party.
The President of the Bijelo Polje Municipal Assembly, Selma Omerović, emphasized that this is a day of our tradition, national identity and emotions, which connects us with Europe, just like eight decades ago, when the joint victory of our peoples with the allies was celebrated.
"The heroism and sacrifice of our glorious ancestors from the beginning of the war in 1941 until today, under extremely difficult conditions in the fight against incomparably powerful enemy forces, was an example for all enslaved peoples in Europe. Their immortal deeds will live forever in the hearts of our peoples and their future generations, which is why today makes us proud to celebrate Europe Day with the most advanced community of European states, of which we want to become a full member," said Omerović, emphasizing the clear message that we stand firmly on the values of anti-fascism on which the European Union was founded.
On behalf of UBNOR and anti-fascists, Ksenija Smolović addressed the audience.
"This is the day when we remember the brave people who had the strength to say 'no' to evil. Their fight was not a fight of just one time, it is a vow that lasts, a vow that we will preserve peace, defend dignity and never forget how much freedom costs. Today we also celebrate Europe, which teaches us that differences are wealth, and solidarity is strength. That only together can we be bigger, stronger and better. But today, perhaps more than ever, our heart beats especially strongly because of a great jubilee of 20 years of independence of Montenegro. 20 years from the moment we took responsibility for our destiny. When we decided to be our own, free and upright. 20 years in which we learned, grew, fell and got up, but we never gave up," said Smolović, adding that it is not just a number but a story about the faith of a people, perseverance and the strength to move forward even when it is difficult.
OBNOR President Mirko Stanić reminded us of the bright descendants who should be followed, such as Rifat Buržović, Aleksa Beća Đilas, Tomaš Žižić, Milovan Jelić, and Radomir Rakočević, instead of traitors, emphasizing that it is the privilege of the people of Bjeloolje to have made a great contribution to the defeat of fascism.
"Our young men and women participated in many battles throughout Yugoslavia. Our young men and women died on the battlefield, patriots died in concentration camps. In the reprisals carried out by the occupiers, everyone died, regardless of who they were, what they were, what nation, what religion and to whom they belonged," said Stanić.
