The trial of four former members of the Serbian State Security, who are accused of murdering journalist and owner of "Dnevni Telegraf" Slavko Ćuruvija, begins today in the Special Court in Belgrade.

The former head of the Department of the DB Radomir Marković, the head of the Belgrade center of the DB Milan Radonjić and the chief intelligence inspector in the Second Directorate of the Department Ratko Romić will be on the dock.

A member of the reserve team of that department, Milan Kurak, will be tried in absentia, because he is on the run.

Serbian media reports that Marković will be brought to the courtroom from the prison in Požarevac, where he is serving a forty-year prison sentence, and Radonjić and Romić from the custody of the District Prison in Belgrade, where they have been since their arrest on January 13, 2014.

Marković, Radonjić, Romić and Kurak are accused of killing Ćuruvija "out of base motives". Marković is accused of having committed the crime by incitement, and the others are accused as co-perpetrators. The accused face a sentence of 30 to 40 years in prison.

Among the evidence proposed by the prosecution is the hearing of about 90 witnesses - former members of the DB, the "Zemun clan", the Special Operations Unit, politicians and others.

The key witness is the former commander of the Special Operations Unit, Milorad Ulemek Legija, who is serving a 40-year prison sentence.

Ćuruvija was killed on April 11, 1999, during the NATO bombing of FR Yugoslavia, in the yard of the building where the premises of the marketing department of "Dnevni Telegraf" were located. At the time of Ćuruvija's murder, the SPS, JUL and SRS coalition was in power in Serbia.
