The United States expressed concern Monday about the political crisis in Macedonia and called on police to investigate the opposition's claims of corruption.
"We are in constant consultation with the Macedonian government and political leaders to express their concern about the current political crisis," State Department representative Jeff Ratke told reporters.
"We call on the opposition party to return to parliament so that it can take part in strengthening the oversight of government institutions, including the oversight of the investigative committee," Ratke said.
The investigative committee, reported AFP, should investigate allegations by the opposition about the corruption of the prime minister, whose resignation is being sought, wiretapping of telephone conversations and provoking ethnic tensions in order to stay in power.
Ratke said that Washington calls on all parties "to respect the right to freedom of assembly and peaceful protest," AFP reported.
