All political groups in the European Parliament (EP) believe that Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama's statement about the unification of Albania and Kosovo is "not very happy", and emphasize that they are in favor of unification through membership in the European Union, "while it is unacceptable to refer to any other commitments". .
Today, after the adoption of the draft resolution on Albania in the EP Foreign Policy Committee, the EP rapporteur for Albania, German MP Knut Fleckenstein, told the Beta agency.
He emphasized that he knows Rama well and from his contacts with him he concluded that the Albanian Prime Minister "may want a faster unification", for which, however, "there is no realistic alternative and Rama knows this very well".
The EP rapporteur for Albania noted that this is also confirmed in a certain way by the statement of the head of Kosovo's diplomacy, Hashim Thaci.
During his visit to Zagreb, Tači stated that he and Rama advocated for a "Europe with open borders", but added that they did not "talk about national unity or changing borders".
Thaci, however, also stated that Rama's words "reflect the reality that can be realized in the future and result from the isolation of Kosovo by the EU".
The German MP and EP rapporteur for Albania called on officials and the public in Serbia to respond to the situation and Rama's statements in a measured manner, without exaggeration.
Fleckenstein explained that the representatives of all political groups in the EP Foreign Policy Committee consulted before the adoption of the draft resolution on Albania, and concluded that Rama's statement on the unification of Albania and Kosovo "is not very happy".
He added that the real thing is "Greater Europe" and to Beta's remark whether he meant to say that it is unacceptable to advocate for a "Greater Albania", he said: "I don't want to say that, but I underline that unification through membership in The EU is leading the way".
Fleckenstein explained that in his previously prepared report for the EP resolution on Albania, that issue and Rama's statement were not mentioned because the report was written earlier.
In the draft resolution, which the EP will discuss in the plenary session, it is said that "Albania has constructive relations with its neighbors and its alignment with the EU's foreign policy serves as an example".
In this document, Albania is congratulated for obtaining the status of a candidate for membership, although it is underlined that the authorities in Tirana must implement reforms to strengthen the rule of law, the judiciary, state administration and the suppression of corruption and organized crime.
