A huge secret nuclear shelter built by the Albanian communist regime out of fear of a nuclear attack from the Soviet Union or the US was opened to the public for the first time on Saturday.
Prime Minister Edi Rama led guests, including ambassadors from Western countries, on a tour of the never-used five-story shelter with 106 rooms.
The shelter was built in the 1970s near Tirana during the time of leader Enver Hoxha, in preparation for a possible attack by "American imperialism or Soviet socialist imperialism."
Hoxha died in 1985, and the communist regime was overthrown in 1990.
Rama said that the shelter was opened on the eve of the commemoration of Albania's liberation from World War II.
The Albanian government plans to turn the shelter into a tourist attraction and exhibition space.
