The Mayor of Belgrade, Siniša Mali, said that by renaming part of Kumodraška Street to Peka Dapčevića Boulevard, a great historical injustice was corrected.
"This is an opportunity to pay tribute to all those who gave their lives for the liberation of Belgrade and to preserve their memory," Mali said after unveiling the plaque with the new street name in the Belgrade municipality of Voždovac.
He reminded that Dapčević was in command during the struggle for the liberation of Belgrade in the Second World War and that today the Yugoslav general and statesman Koča Popović will also get a street in Belgrade.
Mali said that Peko Dapčević was the first honorary citizen of Belgrade, and he received that honor on the first anniversary of the liberation of the city on October 20, 1945.
At the ceremonial renaming of the street, representatives of SUBNOR also laid wreaths at the board with Peko Dapčević's name.
General Peko Dapčević was a participant in the Spanish Civil War and the National Liberation Struggle, a general of the Yugoslav People's Army, an ambassador of the SFRY and a national hero. He commanded the Second Proletarian Division in the battles for the liberation of Belgrade.
