The founder and long-time president of the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), Vojislav Koštunica, announced that he was leaving the party because it abandoned the idea of political neutrality at the election assembly.
"The recent DSS Assembly showed that the party, for pragmatic and apparently tactical reasons, wants to turn to the idea of 'sovereignty', which has different and undefined meanings in politics. It cannot be a substitute for political neutrality, a clear and unequivocal Serbian position and attitude that Serbia, cooperating with everyone, should by no means be a member of the EU," Koštunica told the Beta agency.
"As I consider this to be an essential betrayal of the Program, I have made the decision to leave the DSS. Finally, I want to thank all my friends who fought for the ideas on which the Democratic Party of Serbia was founded and operates," he said.
Kostunica added that more than half a year has passed since he resigned from the position of DSS president and retired from political life.
At the DSS assembly, Sanda Rašković Ivić was elected president, who convincingly defeated the opponent Miloš Aligrudić.
